In 2004 the The North American Chimney Swift Nest Site Research Project (NSRP), administered by the Driftwood Wildlife Association, an independent organization in Austin, Texas, will hold its fourth annual "Swift Night Out." During the Swift Night Out, NSRP enlists the help of bird-enthusiasts in a national count of both chimney swifts and Vaux's swifts (a species found in Western states) over two weekends. The feedback NSRP receives is valuable in estimating the populations of these birds, and formulating strategies for conserving and protecting them.
This year's first count was done over the weekend of August 13–15 and the second will occur over the weekend of September 10–12. If you wish to participate, NSRP has outlined a series of actions you can carry out to help the swifts in your area. The first step is to locate a chimney or Vaux's swift roost in your area—a location where swifts gather at dusk to spend the night. Then, one night over the weekend of September 10–12, observe the roost at dusk and estimate the number of swifts who enter. Contact NSRP with your results. They will post results on their website. You may submit your count to:

Along with the number of swifts counted, include your city, state or province, the date and time you observed the roost, its exact location, a broad description of the site (e.g., school, warehouse, residence), and weather conditions.
