The Trade in Live Reptiles: Exports from the United States
The United States plays a major role in the international trade
in live reptiles not only as a consumer but also as a supplier
of live reptiles to other countries. Most live reptiles
exported from the United States are freshwater turtles raised
on so-called farms. Others are captured from the wild, are
captive-bred, or are first imported to the United States,
repackaged, and then exported to other countries. Live reptiles
exported from the United States are used as pets or, in the
case of freshwater turtles, sold as food.
