Karakul: Sample Letter to the Editor of a Fashion Magazine |

Dear Editor:
I want to tell you about the grisly beginnings of that lamb
jacket you applauded in your most recent issue and to object to
your support of such intentional animal cruelty.
The Humane Society of the United States conducted an
investigation into the shocking reality behind what is often
referred to as broadtail or Persian lamb fur. This high-priced
fur is obtained by slaughtering karakul lambs—either unborn
lambs cut from their mothers' wombs or very young lambs, not
more than three days old.
The younger the lamb, the more valuable the fur is to the
fashion industry. Fetal fur commands the highest price. And the
lambs are killed simply for their pelts—the fur is not a
byproduct of the meat or wool industries. Four to five million
karakul lambs are deliberately killed each year for garments
that command sky-high prices.
I do not condone this sense of style. I urge you to withdraw
your support of this barbaric industry and to focus on
compassionate fashions that cause no harm or suffering to
animals.
Sincerely,
Your Name
