The Humane Society of the United States Launches Television Ad Campaign Targeting IHOP's Support for Extreme Confinement of Animals on Factory Farms

Today, The Humane Society of the United States began running television ads exposing IHOP's continued use of eggs exclusively from hens confined in tiny, barren battery cages—where the birds are immobilized for their entire lives and cannot fully stretch their limbs.

The ads are running first in California, where IHOP and its parent company, DineEquity Inc., are based. As the ads note, California voters last November overwhelmingly passed Proposition 2, the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, phasing out the confinement of animals in crates and cages statewide, and requiring the transition to cage-free production. Prop 2 received more than 8 million votes, more than any citizen initiative in California history.

Boston-based ABP Corporation—which operates the Au Bon Pain restaurant chain—announced its new cage-free egg policy for its Massachusetts locations. Beginning this week, its restaurants throughout the state will only use shell (whole) eggs from hens not confined in cages. The Humane Society of the United States worked with ABP to help the company improve animal welfare in its supply chain. Today, The HSUS applauded the company for adopting a forward-looking policy, which steers away from using eggs from hens confined in tiny battery cages that provide each hen less space than a sheet of paper for her entire life.

"By packaging Issue 2 as pro-animal welfare and pro-food safety, the architects of the ballot measure went a long way to assure its passage.

We have not viewed Issue 2 as a poisonous package, but rather an empty one. The Ohio Farm Bureau and other agribusiness lobby groups cooked it up in an effort to block real reform.

New “No on 2” Ad Unveiled by Ohioans for Humane Farms

Ohioans for Humane Farms—a state ballot committee sponsored by The Humane Society of the United States—released a new ad today urging Ohioans to vote no on Issue 2 this Election Day. Issue 2 would amend the Ohio state constitution to create an industry-dominated livestock board with virtually unchecked power and likely do nothing to help farm animals. The ad points out that agribusiness interests are trying to change the Ohio constitution so they can continue cruel and inhumane practices on factory farms—confining animals in tiny cages and crates so small they can't even turn around. While masquerading as an attempt to improve food safety and animal welfare, Issue 2 does not call for a single agricultural reform, but gives constitutional authority to a small group of largely industry-oriented political appointees to dictate agricultural policy in Ohio. No other state has such a set-up.
