SACRAMENTO – Cats are America’s most popular pets, but an
estimated one-third of all cat owners allow their cats to roam
outside, needlessly putting their feline friends at significant
risk.
The HSUS is joining forces with the Sacramento River Cats to
bring this message to Sacramento-area baseball fans. Staff of
The HSUS will be joined by animal experts from across the
region to hand out free cat-care information and cat toys at
the River Cats 1:05 p.m. game on Sunday, June 20.
That day is also Father’s Day, and is Kid’s Day at Raley
Field. Discounted tickets are available to anyone who visit's
the team’s web site – www.rivercats.com – and orders tickets
through the River Cats’ on-line Group Ticket Window for the “A
Safe Cat Is A Happy Cat” game. Everyone purchasing tickets
through this portal will receive a $2 discount off the regular
$11 ticket price, and is eligible to receive a free T-shirt if
they are among the first 300 Safe At Home attendees to enter
the ballpark.
Many area animal agencies will be in attendance in addition
to The HSUS, including the Sacramento SPCA, Sacramento City
Animal Care Services, Sacramento County Animal Care and
Regulation, Placer County SPCA and Placer County Animal
Control.
“Many cat owners aren’t aware of the dangers faced by cats
who roam outdoors,” said Eric Sakach, director of The HSUS’
West Coast regional office. “We hope that once they know the
facts, they’ll work towards transitioning their cats into
indoor cats.”
Not only do cats endanger wild animals, they face threats
that include traffic and diseases and can fall victim to animal
cruelty.
“It’s heartbreaking to see families lose beloved pets,”
added Sakach. “The Humane Society of the United States and the
Sacramento area animal agencies have great information on
making their outdoor cat an indoor cat.”
The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s
largest animal protection organization with more than eight
million members and constituents. The HSUS is a mainstream
voice for animals, with active programs in companion animals
and equine protection, wildlife and habitat protection, animals
in research and farm animals and sustainable agriculture. The
HSUS protects all animals through legislation, litigation,
investigation, education, advocacy and fieldwork. The
non-profit organization, which is celebrating its 50th
anniversary in 2004, is based in Washington, DC and has 10
regional offices across the country. On the web at
