Rescued Horses Celebrated This Weekend at Lakeland Arena
The Humane Society of the United States and world-renowned natural horsemanship trainers, Pat and Linda Parelli, will join forces to spotlight the trainability and intelligence of rescued horses today at the Lakeland Center in Lakeland, Fla. The HSUS is working with the Equine Rescue and Adoption Foundation, Inc. to help a horse in need of training through a three-day development program with Pat Parelli. The training will be held through Sunday at the center. A portion of the proceeds of some ticket sales will be donated to The HSUS for its equine protection efforts.
The featured horse this weekend is Reina, a 6-year-old thoroughbred mare who had been surrendered by her owner. Though the previous owner could not afford to continue caring for the horse, he demonstrated responsible ownership by seeking assistance in finding a home for the horse instead of selling her to auction, a fate that might have resulted in slaughter, and the export of Reina for human consumption abroad.
"In Florida — as in many parts of the country — the need for horse rescue and adoption has never been greater. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Parellis to celebrate horses, highlight the value of adoptable rescued horses and help find homes for them across the country," said Keith Dane, The HSUS' director of equine protection.
The last Celebration in Fort Worth, Texas featured Thistle, a 5-year-old mustang, one of the 210 wild horses rescued with the help of The HSUS from starvation earlier this year during the investigation into a large-scale neglect case in Nebraska.
"Thistle was a fantastic example of the perfect child's horse and trail partner — good natured, intelligent and friendly with a soft spirit. So many mustangs are like this and being able to start them off right, naturally, just enhances all of that," Pat Parelli said.
Additional information:
- Natural Horsemanship is a gentle training technique that uses knowledge about herd dynamics, horse behavior and communication to help people and horses communicate effectively and build trust-based relationships.
- The Parelli Celebration events offer inspirational and educational seminars and training sessions, designed to help horse owners understand how to communicate effectively with their horses and build a lasting partnership both in and out of the saddle.
- The Celebration events compliment programs developed by The HSUS to encourage horsemen and women to consider a rescued horse when bringing a new horse into the family and to help horse rescues operate more effectively.
- The HSUS has a booth at each Celebration, to provide participants with informational brochures and other horse care materials.
