A virtual card to thank President-elect Barack Obama and his family for their plans to adopt a homeless pet is attracting attention worldwide. During the presidential campaign, Michelle Obama announced that the family wanted to adopt a dog for their two daughters, Malia and Sasha.
More than 6,200 people from the United States and other countries have contributed their personal messages and photos to the card since The Humane Society of the United States created it on Nov. 6. The card has been viewed thousands of times and has spread via email and Facebook.
"By adopting a homeless dog, the Obama family will send a powerful message of hope and change for all the dogs suffering in abusive puppy mills or waiting in animal shelters for a second chance and a loving home," said Michael Markarian, executive vice president of The Humane Society of the United States.
The Obama thank-you card is available for signing until Nov. 28, at which time it will be delivered to the President-elect and his family. To sign the card, visit groupcard.com/c/ObamaDog. Facebook users can also sign the card at apps.facebook.com/groupcards/c/ObamaDog.
The card was created using GroupCard.com, a website that enables groups of people to collaboratively sign and send a free, printable e-card. An unlimited number of people can sign each card, and contributors can position their message, choose a font and add graphics. GroupCard was founded in 2007, and the company is now a finalist for the Facebook FBFund grant competition. GroupCard is used by hundreds of thousands of people, including families, teams, organizations and office groups worldwide.
