The Humane Society of the United States has deployed members of its Animal Rescue team to assist Breckenridge County Animal Control with removing 60 animals from crowded, filthy and neglectful conditions at a residence in Hardinsburg, Ky. The property owner has already plead guilty to charges of animal cruelty, and subsequently surrendered ownership of all of the animals on the property.
“It is a great relief to me that The Humane Society of the United States was able to come in and rescue these 53 dogs and seven cats from a life of neglect,” said Pam Rogers, Kentucky state director for The HSUS. “These animals had been kept in cramped cages and denied socialization or proper medical care for years. It is critical that Kentucky pass stronger animal cruelty legislation to address these hoarding situations, and keep them from flourishing in the state.”
The HSUS took on this mission at the request of local officials, and is being assisted by Breckenridge County Animal Control, Kentucky Humane Society, Bowling Green Warren County Humane, The Shamrock Foundation, the Hardinsburg Fire Department, McDaniels Fire Department, McQuady Fire Department and New Albany Floyd County Animal Control and Shelter.
The dogs, who were living in piles of their own filth, were suffering from a variety of ailments such as mange and parasite infestation. All of the dogs were removed and transported to a nearby emergency shelter set up by The HSUS. They will be checked by a veterinarian and given any necessary medical care.
Today marks a new beginning for these deserving animals. Many of these dogs will now have the opportunity to become the cherished family pets they were always meant to be. The HSUS will have broadcast-quality video available from this rescue for viewing and download by news media outlets at video.hsus.org.
