WASHINGTON — The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is
proud to announce the release of “The Humane Society of the
United States Complete Guide to Cat Care,” written by
award-winning author Wendy Christensen and the staff of The
HSUS. The 320-page hard cover book, published by St. Martin’s
Press, is a comprehensive guide with authoritative and
practical advice about cats, covering everything from
healthcare to understanding feline behavior.
The book celebrates the cat, including sections on the
evolution and domestication of our feline friends, but unlike
other books does not endorse breeding or promote novelty or
purebred cats. Instead, the book focuses on making life better
for the millions of cats already in our world. The book
provides important information on rescuing and rehabilitating
homeless cats, finding a stray’s owner, and helping an outdoor
cat make the transition to a safe indoor environment.
“The guiding principal behind ‘The Humane Society of the
United States Complete Guide to Cat Care,’ has been our desire
to bring a strong sense of respect, wonder and understanding to
the relationship we have with cats,” states Paul G. Irwin,
President of The HSUS. “We hope that this approach will enhance
the unique relationship you have, or hope to have, with the
feline members of your family.”
There are more than 70 million cats in homes nationwide. In
the 1980s, cats surpassed dogs as the most popular pet in
America. Cats now outnumber dogs as the most popular companion
animal sharing their home with families in the U.S. This
development reflects changing housing and lifestyle trends of
today’s typical pet owner.
The ‘Complete Guide to Cat Care’ explores the relationship
between humans and felines in our households while providing
extensive guidance on family and other issues such as bringing
a new baby into the home, introducing your new cat to other
pets in the home, and home safety for your cat.
“Cats have become an integral part of families from coast to
coast,” said Martha C. Armstrong, HSUS Senior Vice President of
Companion Animals and Equine Protection. “The ‘Complete Guide
to Cat Care’ provides insight and information that can benefit
every feline household.”
The Humane Society of the United States is the nation’s
largest animal protection organization with more than seven
million members and constituents. The HSUS is dedicated to the
protection of all animals.
