WASHINGTON —The Humane Society of the United States says a new release from HarperOne, The Green Bible, will offer readers a revelation, not just about caring for the Earth, but about caring for animals.
"Highlighting scripture from its environmental perspectives clearly shows that the Bible has much to say about our responsibilities to care for creation and all of its creatures," said Christine Gutleben, director of The HSUS' Animals & Religion program.
The Green Bible highlights in green, soy-based ink, more than 1,000 references, verses and passages related to the Earth. The Book also contains essays contributed by Brian McLaren, Matthew Sleeth, N.T. Wright, Desmond Tutu and others, and includes a detailed index and personal study guide.
"The Green Bible is the definitive movement Bible that shows that God is green and how we can care for and protect God's creation," according to the publisher's website.
The HSUS, through its All Creatures Great and Small campaign, provides ways for people to practice stewardship on behalf of animals and the environment. "Our campaign is The Green Bible in action," said Gutleben.
The All Creatures Great and Small campaign increases awareness about our moral responsibilities to all animals, including those raised for food. In the last 30 to 40 years, agriculture has taken a harsh turn away from animal husbandry on family farms to unacceptable mistreatment of animals on industrialized, factory farms.
All Creatures Great and Small has received support from a wide range of religious leaders including Right Rev. John Bryson Chane, Bishop of Washington; Imam Muhammad Hagmagid Ali, Vice President, Islamic Society of North America; Fr. John Dear, SJ, Nobel Peace Prize Nominee; Rabbi Shear Yashuv Cohen, Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Haifa, Israel; and Brian McLaren, renowned author, speaker and pastor.
The campaign offers ways for individuals and communities to get involved—from individual study guides to resources meant for small group and large congregation presentation. The Green Bible is a fundamental resource for the All Creatures Great and Small campaign.
A statement from The HSUS is also included on The Green Bible book jacket:
"There has never been a more important time for a resource like The Green Bible. It is essential for anyone interested in a Biblical basis for humane and sustainable living."
Christine Gutleben, director, Animals & Religion
The HSUS will be distributing copies of The Green Bible at upcoming events for the All Creatures Great and Small campaign including a reception at the Washington National Cathedral on Sept. 27.
On Oct. 5, Wayne Pacelle, The HSUS' president and CEO, will also be the Forum guest of Dean Alan Jones at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. For more information about these events, a full list of endorsements, resources and more, visit humanesociety.org/allcreatures.
