Nectar-producing plants provide the best food for attracting
hummingbirds. You can also provide artificial nectar in the
form of sugar water. Here are some tips to help keep
hummingbirds healthy.
Attract hummingbirds by planting a variety of flowers
they prefer near trees that offer them convenient nesting
sites and safe cover.
Put feeders up in early spring near perching sites,
preferably in a shady spot away from breezes.
Choose a feeder that disassembles for easy cleaning.
Clean the feeder with a bottle brush and hot tap water
every three or four days. Do not use soap or detergent.
Use one part granulated white sugar to four parts water
to make nectar. Bring the water to a boil, add sugar, and
remove the pan from heat. Allow the solution to cool
completely before filling the feeder.
Never use honey; it can kill hummingbirds.
Do not use red food coloring to attract hummingbirds.
Instead, select a feeder with red on it or attach a red
ribbon.
Smear salad oil or petroleum jelly around the feeder
opening to discourage insects from using it.
