I recently found a hummingbird who could not fly on the ground in my backyard. I thought he was in the midst of dying and I tried to comfort him.
A friend took him and held up some salvia flowers, and he began to drink. After a quick drink, he would look around, signaling that he was done and wanted to try another bloom.
I kept him in the house overnight, fed him sugar water the next morning, and located a local hummingbird rescuer. I transported him to the rescuer and was kept up to date on his progress and eventual release. Helping this animal was rewarding, and it reinforced my belief in valuing each individual creature, no matter how small or common.
