 Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) and Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) sent a letter to the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration March 23 asking for full details of the investigation into the pet food contamination.

Scientists at the New York State Food Laboratory have found aminopterin, a toxin used as rat poison, in cat food samples from Menu Foods, the manufacturer of the many brands of dog and cat food that are currently the subject of a nationwide recall.
The poison has been blamed for the kidney failure and death of many dogs and cats. It is suspected that the wheat gluten ingredient in the food was contaminated with the poison, but scientists have not yet determined how the toxin got there.
The recall is limited to “cuts and gravy” style pet food in cans and foil pouches produced in Menu’s plants. Dry pet food is not affected by this recall.
Pet owners are urged to check their pet food supply and immediately stop feeding any products on the recall list. Recalled food may be returned to the store where purchased for a full refund.
If your pet exhibits any signs of kidney failure, contact your veterinarian immediately and notify them of what food your pet has been eating. Symptoms of kidney failure include loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, disorientation and changes in water consumption and urination.
If your pet has been affected by the recalled food, please report the situation to the Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine.
