They say that every dog has its day, but that was true for hundreds of dogs this past week. Our canine companions were front and center for The HSUS over just the past few days. Here's a recap:
Vick's Next Play
HSUS president and CEO Wayne Pacelle released the following statement Friday on our work with Michael Vick and his signing with the Philadelphia Eagles:
"Michael Vick admits that what he did to dogs was cruel and barbaric, but now that he has served his time, he wants to be part of the solution rather than part of the problem. He has pledged to make a long-term commitment to participate in our community-based outreach programs to steer inner-city youth away from dogfighting.
"At events with Michael in Atlanta and Chicago, we've seen him deliver a powerful message against animal cruelty. Like so many other major American cities, Philadelphia has a serious dogfighting problem, and groups like the Pennsylvania SPCA have excellent programs to combat dogfighting locally.
"We have not had any discussions with the Philadelphia Eagles and the team did not consult animal welfare groups about its decision, but we look forward to working together to combat the dogfighting problem in Philadelphia and nationwide."
A Matter of Trust
In what could be the most significant financial litigation in animal welfare history, The HSUS—along with two more of the country's most prominent animal welfare organizations—have filed suit in New York's Surrogate Court history to intervene in the matter of Leona Helmsley's $5 billion estate.
We're seeking to force the Helmsley trustees to follow Mrs. Helmsley's expressed intent to help dogs. Less than $100,000 of the initial $136 million Helmsley grants have gone to dog welfare.

No More Fighting
The HSUS assisted authorities in raids of two alleged dogfighting operations in Indiana on Tuesday. The Indiana Gaming Commission and Indiana State Police led the raid in which one person was arrested and more than 90 dogs, along with alleged dogfighting paraphernalia, were seized.
Even the Puppy Mills Are Bigger In Texas
The HSUS, in conjunction with the Humane Society of Cedar Creek Lake and the Kaufman County Sheriff's Department, rescued more than 500 dogs and approximately 15 cats from deplorable conditions at a Kaufman County puppy mill.
A Story With A Happy Ending
Six months after The HSUS assisted Wayne County, N.C., Animal Control in rescuing 283 dogs from a puppy mill, most of the once-suffering dogs are now thriving in the loving care of new families.
This week has been extraordinary for dogs. We'll continue to fight for them—and all animals—in the weeks, months, and years to come.
