The 15th annual Spay Day USA took place on Feb. 24, 2009, with events in honor of Spay Day taking place throughout the month of February.
38,168 Reported Spays and Neuters
Three hundred eighty-two event organizers in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and the Virgin Islands, along with the help of thousands of volunteers, worked together to host 498 events designed to help end the tragedy of euthanizing homeless pets. Together they reported that 38,168 animals—mostly cats and dogs, but also rabbits and one hamster—were spayed or neutered during Spay Day USA 2009. This represents a 17 percent increase over the 32,509 spays and neuters reported during Spay Day USA 2008.
Rhode Island was the only state not represented during Spay Day USA 2009. Sixty-one event organizers registered events but did not report their results.
Photo Contest
Through the 2009 Spay Day Online Pet Photo contest, generous contestants donated more than half a million dollars to benefit the spay/neuter efforts of The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association's Field Services program and Humane Society International, as well as those of 173 eligible U.S. and 30 eligible international Spay Day event organizers. The benefitting U.S. Spay Day event organizers estimate they will be able to spay or neuter up to an additional 7,361 cats and dogs with the more than one quarter of a million dollars donated to them.
