In a pivotal year for the future of whales, the International Whaling Commission met from May 28-31 in Anchorage, Alaska. HSUS and HSI representatives were at the meeting, where Japan and pro-whaling nations tried to turn the tide on whale conservation.
Countries such as Japan, Iceland and Norway want to resurrect a dying industry even though there is little consumer demand for whale products. This meeting provided an opportunity to reverse the current trend towards pro-whaling within the IWC.
