How We Calculate the Number of Seals Killed
During the course of this year's commercial seal hunt in Canada, we estimate that sealers will slaughter 275,000 seals. This estimate is based on the 2008 harp seal quota.
The rate of slaughter will vary over the course of the hunt as different areas are opened and closed for hunting. The HSUS has taken into account historic rates of seal killing, and our figures are based on these. The rate at which our counter documents the number of seals killed during the 2008 hunt will be adjusted accordingly and updated as we receive kill reports from the Canadian government.
NOTE: The "Seals Killed" counter is an estimate based on the quota, and historic rates of killing. While it is a good estimate, it may not reflect the actual number of seals killed in 2007, which may be higher or lower than our counter suggests. The actual total number of seals who will be slaughtered this year remains to be seen.
