Snapshots from the International Day of Action against the Canadian Seal Hunt |
 |
 |
 |
On the International Day of Action against the Canadian Seal Hunt on March 15, 2005, approximately 3,000 people in more than 50 cities participated in demonstrations against Canada's brutal commercial seal hunt. Here are just a few snapshots from rallies from around the globe, taken from e-mails and photographs shared with us by our activist partners.

"The situation there is very difficult because of a law given by the President due to terrorism. Every public demo can be considered an act of terrorism and there are no guarantees, so organizing protests there is always hard for our activists." |

"A thousand flyers were distributed and one hundred people filled out HSUS postcards right on the spot.... Even the police officers assigned to Copley Square got in the act and agreed to contact the Canadian government."

"Most folks didn't realize that the hunt was ongoing (thought it was over in the 70s) so it was an eye-opener for a good number."

"Our demo went very well—and it was well attended too....We handed out virtually every leaflet and got four pages of signatures on a petition. We bought some seal masks which the press photographers seemed to love, although they did mention they were a little 'spooky.' though not as spooky as the goings-on in Canada." |

"We argued with the police for about 30 minutes. They said that our permit didn't allow banners—only 24x24 inch signs…. But we got the message out and perhaps that many security guards and police officers highlighted the event. We had a few people who came out of the [consulate] building to request literature." |

"The highlight for me was when two high school students read their passionate letters against the hunt on stage. Most of the people who came to our rally had never gone to a protest before, or at least not very often. The best thing that came out of our rally was that participants were really inspired by the growing international support for the campaign and are motivated to do more for this issue. We were successful at getting armchair activists out of their living rooms!"

"A half-dozen banners-festooned vehicles from the Funeral Motorcade for the Seals, which circled the block, sounding their horns, adding fire and fury to the "Save The Seals NOW!" war cries. All in all, it was an elating celebration of our collective vision of a hunt-free world in the not too distant future."

"A protest letter was given to a representative of the Canadian ambassador in Croatia, who was in front of the media, denying everything. Luckily, media trusted more the video footage about the last year's slaughter we showed. This is how Croatia raised its voice for the harp seals today!"
