After successfully challenging NMFS’s decision to permit the Navy’s Low Frequency Active Sonar (“LFA”) system because LFA harms sound-sensitive marine mammals like endangered whales, a coalition of conservation and animal welfare organizations expanded the existing lawsuit to challenge the agency’s reauthorization of nearly the same sonar program. Parties reached a settlement limiting the Navy’s sonar use to areas with low populations of marine mammals.
