Hunters use hounds to pursue bobcats, cougars and bears. |
Hound hunting uses packs of dogs to chase bears, bobcats, cougars and other mammals until they are so exhausted that they have no choice except to climb a tree in a last, desperate, futile attempt to escape their pursuers.
The dogs' collars are fitted with radio transmitters so that the hunters don't even have to follow them throughout the chase. They can relax with coffee and sandwiches while the dogs do the work.
When the victims have been treed, the hound hunters simply follow their radios' directional antennas to the site, stand beneath the tree and shoot the terrified animal down.
Of the 28 states that allow bear hunting, 17 allow hunting bears with hounds.
