To show his support for The HSUS, Frederick Hendricks, M.D.—a urologist with an office in downtown Washington, D.C.—hosted a reception last year at the elegant Cosmos Club for about 30 other dedicated friends of The HSUS. President and CEO Wayne Pacelle spoke with the guests about the pressing situations that both The HSUS and animals face. Andrew Rowan, The HSUS's executive vice president of operations, spoke about the global challenges faced by animals outside the United States and what we're doing to address them. Both noted many significant victories and accomplishments, while the guests dined on vegan fare and asked thoughtful questions.
Fred has shown his support in other ways, as well. A few years ago, he established an HSUS charitable gift annuity to help animals. During the April reception, Fred—an Indiana native who travels there frequently to visit family and his alma mater, DePauw University—spoke eloquently about the benefits of charitable gift annuities as vehicles to support HSUS programs, supplement retirement income, and receive tax benefits.
When you establish a charitable gift annuity, you transfer cash, real estate, or marketable securities (e.g., stock, bonds, mutual fund shares, and the like) of at least $5,000 to The HSUS and, in exchange, The HSUS pays you a guaranteed fixed income for life on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis. By transferring these assets, you are giving a gift to The HSUS and purchasing an annuity at the same time.
"The HSUS has always been my favorite animal organization to support because I see so much being accomplished," said Fred. "With Wayne and Andrew at the helm, things seem to be ratcheting up another notch and I am thrilled to see this team go after the businesses that harm animals as if they were inanimate objects. Supporting their projects with my donations, and especially my annuity, leaves me with a wonderful feeling that I am definitely part of the solution for the myriad problems that animals face."
