The school year is underway, and children are hard at work
learning the 3 Rs. In thousands of classrooms across the
country, they're learning a fourth one, too: Respect for
animals.
Educating our youth is crucial if we're to make life better
for animals. You can help teach children everything from
responsible pet care to respect for wildlife and the
environment by providing a classroom in your community with
KIND News™.
Each issue of KIND News (the acronym stands for Kids
In Nature's Defense) includes articles, stories, puzzles,
celebrity interviews, and project ideas that teach humane
lessons and inspire kids in grades K-6 to take action for
animals. For example, children at Lincoln Elementary School in
Roselawn, Indiana, made posters, talked to other classes, and
collected supplies for their local animal shelter. Blanca
Villarreal's class at Austin Elementary in Harlingen, Texas,
collected and recycled plastic ring tops from soda cans to
prevent seagulls and other animals from becoming tangled in
them.
Second grade teacher Jan Whitman uses each monthly issue of
KIND News "to remind students that they can make a
difference." Last year, 98% of teachers using the paper say
that it increased their students' concern about the welfare of
animals. Whitney, a fifth-grader from Valley Center,
California, remarks, "KIND News makes me a better pet
owner and friend to the environment."
Through our youth education division's Adopt-A-Classroom
program, children in 38,000 classrooms nationwide receive
KIND News every month of the school year, making it the
country's most widely used humane education program. But that
represents only about 3% of elementary classrooms in the United
States. You can help expand those numbers: Adopt a classroom
today and help the National Association for Humane and
Environmental Education reach its goal of spreading the seeds
of kindness in every elementary-school classroom in the
country.
Tell us what classroom you'd like to adopt, or let us choose
one for you from our list of those waiting to be sponsored.
