No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes
it for happiness, the good he seeks.
—Mary Wollstonecraft
As the movement to protect animals grows in size and
influence, it has become easier than ever to avoid the use of
animals in laboratories every time you open your wallet. Today
hundreds of companies conduct no animal testing, dozens more
include no animal ingredients, and many make their policies
clear on their labels with phrases like "no animal testing,"
"cruelty free," or "tested by stylists, not on animals."
Drugstores and supermarkets are putting more of these items on
their shelves. Every time you purchase an animal friendly
product, you support animal friendly companies. What could be
easier?
The Humane Society of the United States has helped launch
the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC), a
group of U.S.-based animal protection organizations that urges
companies to adopt a no-animal-testing policy (its Corporate
Standard of Compassion for Animals) and encourages consumers to
purchase products not tested on animals. In 1998, CCIC unveiled
its internationally recognized logo for products that have not
been tested on animals at any stage of development. For further
information on this project, including a list of companies that
have committed to this standard, call 1-888-546-CCIC. We can
also send you Product Testing: It's in Your Hands, our
brochure on the CCIC project.
