HSVMA Commends AAEP for Taking a Stand Against Horse Soring
August 8, 2008
The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA) commends the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) for its recent proactive efforts to end the cruelty associated with the soring of Tennessee walking horses. The AAEP recently issued a white paper entitled, "Putting the Horses First: Veterinary Recommendations for Ending the Soring of Tennesse Walking Horses," in which the organization recognizes that this abusive practice continues despite a longstanding federal ban and in which the group recommends aggressive steps to end the cruelty.
"We welcome this action by the AAEP to put the welfare of the horses first above the interests of those in the industry who allow this painful practice to continue," said Holly Cheever, DVM, member of the HSVMA Leadership Council. "The HSVMA’s goal is to focus on the components of the veterinary oath that commit the profession to protect animal health and relieve animal suffering. We applaud the AAEP for demonstrating this type of commitment and leadership in the veterinary profession. We also strongly encourage the organization and its members to continue this leadership role by working with industry sources to implement the recommendations."
