This dog, who was just one of the hundreds of animals pulled from the ash of the volcanic eruption last month in Chaiten, Chile, immediately touched the hearts of The Humane Society of the United States' Animal Rescue Team, who took him under their wing.
It was in Chaiten that the 11-year old shepherd-mix became mired in the mud, a treacherous mix of ash and water that formed a thick quicksand. Dovi languished for two long days before rescuers were able to reach him, dig him out and transfer him to safety at a veterinary school in Puerto Montt.
When he arrived at the temporary emergency shelter in Santa Lucia, our rescue team acted immediately. They wrapped him in a blanket and made sure he was given priority rescue to the vet school. He arrived at Puerto Montt, and the assessment team noticed that he was wearing a collar, raising hopes that they would find his guardians.
As it turned out, his guardian had already launched a desperate search to find her missing pet. She had already visited the school days before to give them a description of her dog, Dovi, and tearfully begged rescuers to contact her if he was located.
Because of his determined guardian and the actions of the rescue team, the old, gentle Dovi is now safe and happy, reunited with his grateful family.
