The 2008 National Conference on Animals in Disaster will be held in Sacramento June 2-6. The conference is organized by The Humane Society of the United States.
The conference will provide a forum for discussion about topics such as:
- Improving evacuation, rescue and sheltering policies
- How to connect with federal, state and local emergency management agencies
- Establishing field rescue operations
- Veterinary medical issues
- International, federal, state and local level planning and response
Last fall’s wildfires in Southern California demonstrated that including animals in disaster planning and evacuations improves the human disaster response and relief efforts.
The National Conference on Animals in Disaster was held every two years but will run in conjunction with The HSUS’ Expo next year. The 2006 conference featured officials from the Department of Homeland Security and attracted emergency management and animal experts from across the country.
