Greg Biffle may be a hard-charging competitor as a professional NASCAR driver, but off the track, he's got a real soft spot for animals. Even better, Biffle backs up his caring with action. In fact,
The Greg Biffle Foundation just donated $10,000 to each of four animal shelters in the New Orleans area that were gravely affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Biffle and Nicole Lunders of The Foundation recently visited one of those shelters, the St. Tammany Humane Society, to deliver his donation in person. At St. Tammany, Biffle and Lunders met the executive director and staff, toured the facility to view the storm damage, and visited with some of the animals. They were accompanied by staff from The HSUS and Steve Byrnes from FOX Broadcasting who documented the visit to air on NASCAR Live! on the Speed channel.
Biffle was clearly moved by meeting the people and animals at St. Tammany: "Despite the devastation, and the fact that they're still trying to recover, they're so committed to making life better for the animals every day. The number of homeless animals is on the rise, medical costs are soaring, and shelters in the area are in the midst of a puppy and kitten boom. Yet they continue to provide the best possible care to animals in need of help. It's really inspiring."
The Greg Biffle Foundation previously provided funds to help cover the cost of transporting more than 300 animals out of the disaster zone to a shelter in the northeast. The Foundation also has produced its second annual NASCAR Pet Calendar, featuring drivers and their pets. Biffle notes that sales of the calendar will provide more funding for shelters in need.
The four animal shelters aided by The Foundation’s donations were identified by The HSUS as those in need of immediate assistance. In addition to St. Tammany Humane Society, Ascension Animal Advocates, Washington Parish Humane Society, and Hancock County Humane Society each received $10,000. The HSUS continues to provide aid in the area, and is committed to helping animal shelters throughout the Gulf Coast region rebuild and restore their services to even better than they were before last year’s devastating disasters.
