TRINIDAD & TOBAGO – More than 140 dogs were spayed, vaccinated and given flea and tick treatment here this week in an animal wellness clinic to prevent unwanted litters and the spread of disease. A donor who wishes to remain unidentified gave Humane Society International the funding for the efforts.
"There was a better turnout than we expected," said Kitty Block, HSI vice president. "Despite some dogs having health issues, all owners seemed receptive to advice on how to care for their pets."
Thousands of animals are euthanized each year on these two islands and thousands more try and survive on the streets. This first clinic is part of a three-year program to reduce overpopulation and improve the health of dogs on both islands. Local organizations, such as Animal Welfare Network, T&T SPCA and The Pegasus Foundation are all partners in the effort.
HSI plans to run two weeklong clinics a year.
