Humane Society International (HSI) and its parent organization, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), participate in international agreements that either directly or indirectly affect animals, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and the International Whaling Commission (IWC).
Our participation in treaties varies: we attend meetings of treaty members, draft policy and technical papers, lobby member countries, and suggest language for treaties at the drafting stage or amendments existing. HSI and The HSUS also educate the international press, the public, and our members about the good or harm done to animals by countries participating in these agreements.
