As a member of the Trade and Environmental Policy Advisory Committee (TEPAC), HSI advises the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on environmental matters that arise in the course of free trade agreement negotiations. This includes the creation of environmental consulting committees between Free Trade Agreement (FTA) partners to promote environmental protection initiatives, as well as public participation provisions that allow all parts of society to have a say in the implementation of the environmental provisions contained in free trade agreements. HSI representatives also frequently submit comments to and testify before the U.S. Congress regarding ongoing FTA negotiations.
