The 61st annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission was held on the island of Madeira in Portugal from June 22-26, 2009. HSI staff attended; their reports are below.
HSI believes that, in 2009, it is legally valid and justified by current environmental circumstances for the IWC to place greater emphasis on conservation rather than maintaining a commercial whaling industry which is no longer internationally acceptable.

With the world’s whales currently facing a myriad of threats, including climate change, habitat degradation, pollution, and overfishing of prey species, the only way forward is to end all commercial whaling.
Efforts being made by pro-whaling countries to circumvent the ban on commercial whaling should be strongly opposed and instead a global sanctuary should be created to protect all whales from all forms of commercial whaling.

Whales cannot survive increased hunting. Continuing to hunt whales in this day and age is inhumane, unnecessary, and intolerable. Most of the world would rather watch than eat them.
