Polar bears are the Arctic's top predators. These magnificent creatures are threatened by global warming, which is literally melting their habitat, and contamination from pollutants that flow to the north from the industrialized south. They are also the only marine mammal routinely targeted by sport hunters, in Canada and Greenland.
In May 2008, the U.S. listed polar bears as "threatened," under the Endangered Species Act, but the bears still need greater protection. HSI is working to protect polar bear habitat and to stop the recreational killing of this king of the far north.
