Founded in July 2003, the Kathmandu Animal treatment Centre, or KAT, has worked to prevent overpopulation of street animals by educating the public and local government on humane alternatives to poisoning, encourage responsible pet ownership, and initiate a successful and ongoing Animal Birth Control (ABC) program.
HSI first encountered KAT in October 2003, when KAT had hopes for a treatment center and a spay/neuter program. In a very short time, with support from HSI, KAT managed to achieve this and much more.
KAT is well-known in its community, offering an ongoing sterilization program, emergency services for injured animals, and a humane education initiative for the general public. Jan Salter, KAT's founder, and Khageshwaar Sharma Bhattari, Shelter Manager, have attended HSI's annual Animal Care Expo for further training. Other KAT staff have trained with the ABC Extension program in Jaipur, India, run by Dr. Jack Reese and Help in Suffering.

KAT also has a flourishing volunteer program, utilizing the skills of casual travelers, tourists, volunteer veterinarians and veterinary technicians, and others who are interested in exploring their knowledge and assisting a hard-working animal welfare team.
As a direct result of their efforts, KAT has sterilized and immunized 5,899 dogs against rabies through the ABC program. They have also provided emergency medical treatment to more than 1,462 dogs through the Rescue and Treatment Program.
KAT also eagerly participated in HSI's first Spay Day International in February 2008.
HSI has supported KAT since its inception and partnered with them on a number of their specific programs. We look forward to watching them continue to grow and expand.
