HSI is fighting to reduce the level of suffering endured by what is perhaps the largest single group of animals—those destined for slaughter for human consumption. Nearly one billion animals are killed for food annually in developing countries, about 60% without pre-stunning. HSI works to share knowledge about humane handling, transport and slaughter and takes part in initiatives like the Handle with Care Long Distance Transport Campaign.
