For Spay Day International, Help in Suffering caught, sterilised, vaccinated, hospitalised and released 109 street dogs. This work was undertaken by two veterinary surgeons and four animal nurses/technicians. HIP also conducted six surveys of the street dog population in four areas of Jaipur, three of which had not been surveyed for more than a year. The survey brought some good news: of the 348 dogs counted, 84 percent were spayed females and 74 percent were neutered males. The total rabies vaccination coverage was 73 percent—above the recognised threshold vaccination coverage of 70 percent required to control rabies transmission. |

Herzelia cooperated with the Herzelia Municipal Spokesperson to advertise about the benefits of spaying and neutering, and encourage the public to spay/neuter and to call their municipal vet for further information and referrals for discounted spay/neuter of dogs with various vets. Next month, they will advertise about spaying and neutering of street cats, and Herzelia will cooperate in advertising this subject throughout 2009. Also added a call for responsible pet ownership and spaying and neutering to all of Herzelia's newspaper and magazine ads, to go on throughout 2009. In addition, Herzelia Loves Animals established a "never say no to spaying" policy—as long as the organization has the funds, they will spay/neuter at their expense street cats and the pets of low-income households. |

Ongata Rongai is a rapidly growing town 13km from Nairobi. The Kware area of Ongata Rongai consists of low-cost, high-density housing and most people in that area own dogs. It is one of the areas where there are sporadic outbreaks of rabies amongst the dog population. So, this was the target for Kenya SPCA's Spay Day International campaign. Publicity was also spread through the Chief and the churches and by a public address system. The organization transported 32 dogs and cats to their clinic at the KSPCA for sterilization and vaccination, and returned them to their communities after recovery. On Tuesday the 24th of February 2009, a total of 100 animals (pets and strays) were successfully spayed/neutered. The mission was accomplished and BETA hoped this was the beginning of a sequence of continuous future events. Six veterinary clinics assisted with BETA's Spay Day International event: "Animals," "Les 4 Pattes," "Animal House Hospital," "Happy Pets," "Mamalia," and "Animed," with their respective eight veterinarians: Dr. Fouad Hajj (President of the Lebanese Veterinarian Syndicate), Dr. Joseph Ahwach, Dr. Fawzo Nicolas, Dr. Elias Nicolas, and Dr. Christo Helin, Dr. Chadi Tarek, Dr. Marc Kassab, and Dr. Walid Darwich. To add to the success, four interns aspiring to become veterinarians shadowed Dr. Fouad Hajj at his clinic! Seventeen dedicated volunteers worked long hours to assist with everything from trapping and transport to clinic support to pet owner education.
"The whole day, I had this huge smile on my face," said Joelle El Massih, Co-Founder of BETA. "I'm thankful that another 100 dogs and cats will not be breeding. Seeing all those animals in and out of surgery is like someone giving you a million dollars." |

On February 13, Romania Animal Rescue/Romania Animal Rescue Foundation, in collaboration with GIA Bucharest, spayed/neutered 47 dogs in Giurgiu, Romania. This was the first Spay Day held in Giurgiu.

“It was not only stray dogs that were brought in for Spay Day, but people came with their own dogs to have them neutered,” said Raluca Simion of GIA Bucharest. ”The good part is that people of all ages came there to have the animals neutered—there are so many myths that older people find hard to ignore—so this was of great help.” |

Winelands' promotion started on 10th February, when 28 recently adopted pets were sterilised. They had had a very successful re-homing period over the Christmas holidays and it is compulsory for all “adoptees” to be brought back for their operations. During this time, a very small Labrador cross puppy was adopted, and he was to be back soon for his op! On 25th February, the hottest day of summer, thanks to the hard work of Ebervet Community Vet Care and Winelands' staff and volunteers, 56 pets were sterilised. These belonged to low-income members of the community, who cannot afford private veterinary assistance.
"We battled to keep the animals cool and none of the humans could have smelt too good by the end of the day," laughed Sarah Ford, Chairman of Winelands SPCA. "But everyone was still smiling as they wearily signed off late in the afternoon." |

Animal Welfare Network published a full page article for Spay Day International in the most widely read daily newspaper in Trindad and Tobago. The newspaper has a readership of about 80,000 and is widely read among all groups but particularly working and middle income residents. The article focused on the importance of spaying/neutering as a humane method of population control and the organization highlighted their annual Spay Week Programme, as well as the rural free spay programme (SPOTT-Spaying Prevents Overpopulation in Trindad and Tobago). |

There were several activities for Spay Day International in St. Croix. The Animal Welfare Center hosted an informational booth at the three-day Agriculture and Food Fair of the U.S. Virgin Islands, which is the largest agricultural exposition in the Territory and averages an attendance of 20,000. In addition to literature and posters with information about spay/neuter at a veterinary clinic of choice (all St. Croix vets are participating in this program), they also had off-site adoptions. One special adoptee was Mama—a dog surrendered with her puppies because her owner did not want to care for her or the puppies. All the puppies were adopted, but Mama had not been. However, at the Fair, she found a forever home.
In addition, the organization's Humane Education team promoted a Spay Day Essay Contest to all 5th through 8th graders in both public and private schools across the island. Students were asked to write about the importance of spaying or neutering their cats and dogs; dozens of students responded, with an increase over last year’s contest entries. The organization also created a radio spot about pet overpopulation based on an actual animal control call to their warden. Several citizens have called staff or board members with positive response to the ad. Lastly, the organization's director of animal care operations spoke to a conference charge meeting of nearly 100 persons about pet overpopulation. This presentation was to a Spanish-speaking group—one of their target audiences. |
