Humane Society International (HSI) Europe’s record of success includes the following important victories for animals:
- Successfully driving the European Chemicals Agency to issue guidance [PDF] that could spare 4.5 million animals from gruesome deaths in chemical poisoning tests
- Ensuring that the EU’s implementation of a global classification system for chemicals allows for use of non-animal test results in order to prevent duplicative animal testing
- Pressuring the European Commission to adopt a swifter acceptance process for product safety tests that do not involve animals
- Successfully lobbying the European Parliament to require the Commission to report by the end of 2008 on its progress (or failure) to adopt all available, alternative methods for product safety testing
- Securing a complete EU ban on the import, export and trade in cat and dog fur
- Successfully campaigning for an EU ban on the trade in seal products, thereby removing the primary market for Canada's globally condemned sealing industry
- A ban in Europe on setting on dolphins in the course of EU fishing
- A complete ban on the use of pelagic driftnets for EU countries
- Raising consumer awareness about the treatment of horses in the production of the hormone replacement drug Premarin.
