Hay for Horses helps animals in times of drought and disaster. |
The drought currently gripping the U.S. shows no signs of abating—making horse rescue organizations anxious as they look to stockpile hay for the winter.
Vital Stuff
Decreased production, fewer cuttings and rising fuel costs have all impacted the ability of horse owners to find quality, affordable hay in the quantities they need.
Horse rescue organizations— which rely on grants and donations to keep their horses cared for—are particularly impacted by the rising cost of hay, because every extra dollar spent on hay further limits funding for other important needs like hoof and veterinary care.
Keeping Them Stocked
To help these non-profit horse rescue organizations purchase hay in times of drought and other natural disasters, The HSUS established the Hay for Horses Fund. In 2006, the fund provided a steady supply of hay for several hundred horses through the winter months.
"The Hay for Horses fund is a great way HSUS supporters can directly impact the lives of rescued horses," said Keith Dane, director of Equine Protection for The HSUS. "All donations go directly to help horse rescues feed their horses—keeping them healthy as they await adoption."
