HSUS Sponsors Jay McCarroll at N.Y. Fashion Week

Fur-free fashion designer Jay McCarroll, winner and star of the fashion-based reality show Project Runway, has partnered with HSUS's Fur-Free Campaign to debut the designer's spring collection at New York Fashion Week in September. The joint project and others to be announced later this year will focus the spotlight on compassionate fashion.

TAKE ACTION

Ask your representative for truth in fur labeling.

McCarroll will also act as a judge for this fall's Cool vs. Cruel fashion design contest, which encourages fashion design students to learn about the suffering and death (video: extremely graphic images) that go into producing the 50 million-plus animal pelts that enter the garment trade each year.

"I'm thrilled to work with The HSUS because I care about animals and love making great clothes that don't cause animals to suffer," McCarroll said. "With so many fun and fashionable alternatives, there's no reason to use fur. As a designer, I know that compassion is in fashion, and the animals need their fur more than I do."

We Have a Winner

The HSUS-sponsored show will be McCarroll's first collection at New York Fashion Week as an independent designer, but he's no stranger to this epicenter of high fashion. His clothes first hit these famous runways in February 2005, when his widely praised collection beat out those of the other two finalists of Project Runway, cementing his status as a television star. Commenting on the runway show, The Fashion Week Daily said, "McCarroll is our winner: highly skilled, attentive to fit, with a brilliant eye for color. No gimmicks here—just ultra-stylish clothes."

The Fur-Free Campaign works with the fashion industry to end the use of animal fur in fashion. Spearheading this effort has been Annie Judah, fashion industry liaison for The HSUS, who covers Fashion Week in New York and Los Angeles on her fashion blog. Upon meeting McCarroll at New York Fashion Week, Judah realized they shared a concern for the well-being of animals and the strong conviction that fashion doesn't have to involve cruelty.

"Jay creates cruelty-free clothes that not only look beautiful but also show a beautiful empathy," Judah said, "His dedication to promoting compassionate fashion and exposing the cruelty of fur make Jay a natural partner for The HSUS."

The Importance of Being Furless

The HSUS is a strong supporter of fur-free designers and has previously sponsored Stella McCartney and Benjamin Cho.

With half the finished fur garments entering the United States originating in China (video: extremely graphic images), which has no animal welfare laws and kills millions of dogs and cats for fur (video), designers, magazine editors, celebrities and consumers must shun fur. More than ever, it is important to support fur-free designers like Jay McCarroll and sign our pledge to go fur free.
