Thank You, Buffalo Exchange!

Buffalo Exchange was a huge help in our Coats for Cubs program.
Talk to any wildlife rehabilitator and you'd know that springtime is "baby" season. More than any other time of year, spring is when rehabbers are guaranteed to have their hands full—caring for any number of raccoons, foxes, squirrels, possums, rabbits, bobcats, fawns and other wildlife orphaned or injured in the bustle of springtime and the proximity to human activity.

Buffalo Exchange to the Rescue

This year, the babies are in luck. In addition to the donated furs that come directly into The Humane Society of the United States for the Coats for Cubs program, national resale clothing chain Buffalo Exchange collected more than 1,050 used furs at their locations in honor of Earth Day—making this the best year for fur donations in the history of the groups' collaboration.

Through Coats for Cubs, all of these furs go back to the animals to be used as bedding and nesting material for wild animals in shelters, sanctuaries and rescue facilities across the country and Canada.

Coats Across the Country

Each year for the past three years, Buffalo Exchange spreads the word about Coats for Cubs and accepts used fur in any of their stores between November 1 and April 22 (Earth Day).

Stores in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Orange County are still accepting furs through May 31, 2008.

So far, Buffalo Exchange has collected nearly 3,000 fur items for the animals. This year, stores in Tucson, followed by Austin, Chicago and Denver, ranked highest for most donations collected this year.

Whether it's because they learned about the cruelty of fur and had a change of heart, or were already fur-free but inherited a fur coat, compassionate residents of these cities were able to give meaning to their old furs that originated from so much suffering.

A Fitting Philosophy

Buffalo Exchange is a resale fashion store with 36 locations across the U.S. The company cares about the environment and functioning in a socially-responsible manner, and it is the company's philosophy that "trading used clothing has a positive environmental impact."

This might explain why Buffalo Exchange has been so enthusiastic about supporting Coats for Cubs: after all of the energy expended and cruelty involved in the production of fur for fashion, it's hard to imagine a more positive environmental impact than recycling fur by giving it back to the animals.

What You Can Do

  • If you have friends who wear fur, ask them to watch our video on the cruel treatment of raccoon dogs for the fur industry (warning: very graphic images).

  • If you haven't done so already, please ask your federal legislators to support the Dog and Cat Fur Prohibition Enforcement Act.

  • Take part in our Coats for Cubs program. Donate your unwanted fur coats and give back to the animals.
