While consumer spending decisions ultimately support or reject the cruel fur trade, the fashion industry—designers, retailers, fashion editors and writers, celebrities and others—all have the power to influence what consumers buy. The Fur-Free Campaign works with both consumers and fashion insiders to encourage decisions that reject the cruelty of fur and celebrate the many warm and fashionable alternatives instead.
Fur Free Retailers and Designers
You already know how cruel fur is. But with labeling laws being what they are, how do you know which brands to trust? We've compiled a list of fur-free retailers and designers to inform your shopping. The list includes links to their online policies, when available, and the dates we confirmed the information. You may be surprised who's on it.
Helping Consumers Shop with Confidence
The Fur-Free Campaign investigates and exposes fur advertising and labeling that breaks the law or prevents consumers from making an informed decision.
Our ongoing investigation has revealed major retailers and designers in the United States selling raccoon dog fur as everything from faux to coyote.
We’re also working to close the loophole in the fur labeling laws that lets unlabeled fur garments be sold to an unsuspecting public.
Working with Designers
Whether
sponsoring the runway show of fur-free designer Jay McCarroll, attending fashion week in New York, L.A., and Paris, or talking with designers and retailers about their fur policy, we’re always working within the industry to make change.
The outreach is working. Calvin Klein and Kenneth Cole both informed us of their decisions to go fur-free after discussions with us about their policies.
The HSUS's Fur-Free Campaign sponsors two student design contests that encourage young emerging professionals to think about the cruelty of fur, and its creative alternatives.
The Design Against Fur contest is a project of the Fur Free Alliance, of which The HSUS is a member. The contest asks graphic design students to create poster images that creatively express a fur-free sentiment. View the Design Against Fur 2006 contest winners here.
In partnership with the Art Institutes, a network of schools in the graphic and creative arts throughout the United States and Canada, the Cool vs. Cruel contest challenges fashion students to reinterpret some of the latest runway looks that use fur—without the cruelty. This winter, the third annual Cool vs. Cruel contest will be even bigger and better than the last one.
