Legislation

Legislation in New York would protect foxes from anal electrocution, a common killing method on fur farms.

Each year in the United States, more than 2.5 million animals—mostly mink, but also foxes, chinchillas and other animals—are cage-raised and killed for their fur.

No federal laws govern the humane treatment or killing of these animals, and state anti-cruelty laws commonly exempt standard agricultural practices. It is no wonder, then, that animals are kept in tiny barren wire-mesh cages—deprived of their natural habitat—and killed using barbaric methods that include anal and genital electrocution.

In addition to animals who suffer in cages, millions of animals suffer and die in traps each year in the United States. Despite being considered inhumane by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the steel-jaw leghold trap is still legal and used heavily in much of the United States by fur trappers.

We work to create laws that protect animals—including accidentally caught dogs, cats and threatened and endangered species—from cruel and indiscriminate traps. We also work to address the abuses of the fur farming industry, and to mandate truth in fur labeling.
