There are lots of ways kids can celebrate National Farm Animals
Awareness Week. You can take the quiz below or download a few
games to test your knowledge of farm animals. Or you can simply
enjoy the artwork of cartoonist Patrick McDonnell, who is a
terrific friend of the animals. He will devote his comic strip
Mutts, which is syndicated to more than 400 newspapers
nationwide, to teaching kids (and adults alike) why farm
animals are so great.
Old MacDonald Had a Farm
Everyone's heard the old children's tune, but how many have
actually been to Old MacDonald's farm—or anyone's farm? The
best way to celebrate NFAAW is to visit a local farm where you
can meet the animals up close and in person. Pigs love belly
rubs, and cows like it if you scratch behind their ears. There
are undoubtedly farms in your area that are open to the public
year-round, and many offer tours. Just check your local
newspaper and plan your visit.
