The Bad Easter Egg Is in Hot Water

Wendy's policy of only purchasing eggs from caged hens supports cruel factory-farming conditions.
Around this time of year, many people get excited about eggs, whether they’re dyeing them or hunting them. But this year—more than any other—it's time for Easter egg lovers to take a closer look at which eggs are really in hot water.

Across the country, hundreds of companies and universities are separating themselves from the 'bad eggs' by ending or are decreasing their use of eggs from hens stuffed into tiny battery cages. Corporations like Burger King, Wolfgang Puck, Safeway, Denny's, Carl's Jr. and Hardees are all moving away from battery eggs.

And California voters recently submitted nearly 800,000 signatures in support of placing a measure on the state's November ballot to prohibit cruel battery cages (as well as abusive gestation crates and veal crates).

Wendy's Hard-Boiled Cruelty

This is all promising news for laying hens, but there's one company that is ardently defending its exclusive use of battery cage eggs. For a year, The HSUS has repeatedly called attention to Wendy's unreasonable, unconscionable refusal to take even the smallest step away from battery cages. Its competitors are starting to use cage-free eggs—yet Wendy's is a holdout, using only eggs from caged hens.

Tens of thousands of consumers have asked the company to do the right thing. Yet Wendy's still needs more encouragement to follow its competitors' lead. This Easter, take a moment for the hens. It can make a world of difference.
