Virgil Butler, a former chicken slaughter plant worker who became an inspiring and effective animal advocate, passed away Dec. 15. Virgil was a major force for animals, and his untimely passing is a tragedy for the many people whose lives he touched, as well as the animals whose interests he championed so passionately.
Virgil worked for many years slaughtering chickens for Tyson Foods. In early 2003, Virgil blew the whistle on the slaughter abuses at the Arkansas slaughter plant where he worked, detailing shockingly inhumane practices to the media.
Becoming a vegetarian and full-time advocate, Virgil worked tirelessly to inform people about his experiences and the abuse that he witnessed firsthand. His efforts attracted media attention and drew legions of readers worldwide to his blog, many of whom were inspired by the power of his firsthand account.
Virgil's courage, dedication, and compassion leave a legacy that will continue to inspire people to reduce animal suffering. As he stated in a Los Angeles Times article, "One person can make a difference if you just don't shut up ... If you keep talking long enough, people will hear you."
