Following discussions with The HSUS, last Friday Wendy's announced that it will start using cage-free eggs.
This advancement was thanks in large part to thousands of HSUS supporters who asked Wendy’s to move away from cruel and inhumane battery cage confinement of laying hens.
McDonald's Lagging Behind
Wendy’s modest but meaningful progress was the latest among major fast-food companies—but McDonald's now stands virtually alone in only using eggs from caged hens.
On Tuesday, Paul Shapiro, senior director of The Humane Society of the United States' factory farming campaign, spoke at McDonald's annual meeting in Oak Brook, Ill. He asked shareholders to approve our resolution asking the chain to start using cage-free eggs.
The resolution received a five percent vote—a high percentage for the first time shareholders have voted on the issue.
And more importantly, this means that The HSUS can move forward on presenting the issue before shareholders again next year, if necessary.
Let's Keep Up the Momentum
Egg-laying hens need your help! McDonald's only uses eggs from caged hens in the United States. Call 1-800-244-6227 and ask the company to start switching to cage-free eggs.
