Undercover video [WARNING: extremely graphic images] shows cows unable to walk being pushed and run over with a forklift at Hallmark. |
The HSUS released new video footage from its undercover investigation of Hallmark Meat Packing showing a downed cow being dragged to slaughter. The video footage, which The HSUS shared with USDA investigators, was one piece of evidence that led the agency to instigate the largest beef recall in U.S. history on Feb. 17.
Today, members of Congress joined HSUS President and CEO Wayne Pacelle in calling on USDA to ensure that food produced for the school lunch program is safe and crippled cows aren't slaughtered to feed schoolchildren.
Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), who is the chair of the House Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, announced that Congress will hold hearings into the matter next month.
Representative George Miller (D-Calif.) , who is the chair of the House Education and Labor Committee, announced that the General Accountability Office opened an investigation into the case today.
The statements come on the heels of earlier statements issued following the release of the investigation.
Below are some statements and calls of action from members of Congress:

House of Representatives
