Celebrate a Better Future for Farm Animals

Among many victories in 2008 is the passage of California's Prop 2 to create better conditions for egg-laying hens.

Farm animals had a big year in 2008.

In January, The HSUS's undercover investigation exposed workers torturing downed dairy cows at a Southern California slaughter plant, causing the nation's largest-ever meat recall.

In November, California voters passed Proposition 2, the Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act, in a landslide. Prop 2 will free nearly 20 million hens, pigs and calves from languishing in tiny cages their whole lives.

What's more, both this initiative and the investigation prompted an avalanche of media attention, informing untold millions of people about the routine—and unacceptable—abuses farm animals endure.

Share the Holidays Humanely

Thanks in part to this unprecedented amount of attention to farm animal welfare, more people are celebrating the holiday season with delicious, satisfying meatless holiday fare than ever before. And they're considering making more humane decisions as we head into 2009.

Healthier eating is usually high on the list of many people's New Year's resolutions for their health, the environment, or to reduce animal suffering.

Vegetarian foods are a great antidote to factory farms, which gobble precious natural resources, contribute enormously to global warming, and pollute our environment. They also cram animals into cages and crates and slaughter them in often agonizing ways.

A Taste of Kindness

For those looking to reduce, refine, or replace animal products in their diet in 2009, there's an abundance of options available. Delicious meat, egg and dairy alternatives are more convincing than ever, and an ever-expanding variety of recipes are a great introduction to the exciting culinary adventure vegetarian eating can be.

Check out The HSUS Guide to Vegetarian Eating, filled with recipes that will tempt your taste buds. Plus, find tips to help you celebrate farm animals and humane eating on New Year's and every day.

Although 2008 was a banner year for farm animals, with your help we can make 2009 an even better one
