The Humane Society of the United States provided four travel awards to graduate students to attend the International Society of Applied Ethology's 36th International Congress in Egmond aan Zee, The Netherlands, from August 6-10.

Designed to recognize the importance of graduate student research, The HSUS Graduate Student Travel Awards are based on the potential of each student's research to improve farm animal welfare. This year's winners are Fernando Machado Wolf from Brazil, Kristopher Chandroo from Canada, Helena Chaloupkova from the Czech Republic, and Sara Shields from California.

Susanne Abromaitis of The Farm Animals and Sustainable Agriculture section of The HSUS was on hand to congratulate the winners and to support their research to improve farm animal welfare.

The ISAE is a professional association of scientists working in the field of applied animal behavior, and publishes the academic journal, Applied Animal Behavior Science. The International Congress of the ISAE provides an excellent opportunity for animal welfare researchers around the globe to come together and share information and ideas.

The students' research ranged from antagonistic piglet behavior to the welfare status of farmed fish, and demonstrated their scientific excellence and their potential to advance the field of farm animal welfare.

The four travel award recipients:

  • Fernando Machado Wolf, LETA: Laboratorio de Etologia Aplicada CCA, Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Florianolpolis, Brazil, "Influence of age at weaning on behavior of outdoors raised piglets"—poster presentation.

  • Kristopher Chandroo, Aquaculture Centre, Department of Animal & Poultry Science, University of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, "The welfare status of farmed fish: sentience and pain perception"—paper presentation.

  • Helena Chaloupkova, Ethology Group Research Institute of Animal Production, Prague, Czech Republic, "Effect of housing system of lactating sows on piglets' behavior"—poster presentation.

  • Sara Shields, Department of Animal Science, University of California-Davis, "Dustbathing substrate preferences in broiler chickens: implications for animal welfare"—paper presentation.

The HSUS has offered travel grants to graduate students participating in previous meetings of the ISAE, recognizing the importance of scientific research to improving the well-being of animals, and the need for thoughtful discussion on animal welfare issues.
