| Many battery-caged hens suffer from feather loss caused in part by their thwarted desires to dustbathe. Under normal conditions, chickens regularly bathe in dust to keep their feathers in good condition and to regulate their temperature. Factory-farmed hens still retain the natural urge to dustbathe, yet can only beat their bodies against the metal cage wires. |
