The New England Regional Office (NERO) of The Humane Society of the United States, located in Jacksonville, Vermont, serves the animals and people of six states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.
As part of The HSUS's field services division, NERO coordinates many of the organization's national programs and activities at the local level. The office focuses on a variety of animal protection issues specific to New England. We provide training and resources for animal care and control agencies, help communities solve urban wildlife conflicts humanely, lobby state and local policymakers in order to improve animal protection laws, and and work closely with local coalitions focusing on a variety of animal protection issues such as ending coyote contest hunts and pheasant stocking programs.
NERO is actively involved with several region-specific programs that support our mission to promote the protection of all animals. We're members of statewide animal cruelty response networks in both New Hampshire and Vermont and coordinate resources and training for animal cruelty investigations throughout the region. We lead a statewide coalition to combat illegal animal fighting in Connecticut and an animal welfare coalition in Rhode Island, and are closely involved with disaster planning efforts in every New England state.
Whether we're providing hands-on assistance in the field or behind-the-scenes assistance at an important hearing, NERO strives to make improvements for all animals in New England with the help of our members and contributors.
